How Do You Clean Your Invisalign Retainers & Tray?

September 20, 2022
How Do You Clean Your Invisalign Retainers & Tray?

Making the decision to invest in your oral health is always a wise one. For you, this means choosing Invisalign. These soft, clear aligners have the power to transform your smile by straightening your teeth, aligning your bite, and more. Plus, they do this without you ever having to wear traditional metal braces. Sounds like a win-win, doesn’t it?

While wearing your aligners 22 hours every day is key to their success, so is keeping them clean. After all, they are up against your teeth all day long - you are going to want them to be clean.

Below you will find everything you need to know about keeping your Invisalign retainers and tray clean.

Brush Regularly

Believe it or not, gently brushing your retainers with a toothbrush is a great way to ensure they are clean. Once you remove them from your mouth, rinse them with water, and begin brushing. All you need is a soft toothbrush and water.

By brushing your Invisalign aligners regularly every day you will stop the buildup of bacteria, protecting your oral health. Be sure to avoid the use of toothpaste that may be too abrasive and can scratch the surface of your clear plastic aligners.

Rinse After Eating

With Invisalign, you have the freedom of removing your retainers every time you eat or drink. It’s perhaps one of the biggest benefits of choosing this treatment. To keep your retainers clean, get in the habit of rinsing them before you put them back into your mouth after eating. Rinsing may not be as effective as brushing, but it does reduce the chance of saliva and plaque build-up and damage to your oral health. Brushing your teeth after eating before replacing your rinsed retainers is even more effective.

Morning and Nightly Routines

There is a good chance you already have a morning and night oral hygiene routine that includes things like brushing, flossing, rinsing with mouthwash, etc. to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

With Invisalign, you can keep your normal routine without having to make many adjustments to the way you care for your oral health. However, you will need to add the additional step of rinsing and brushing the aligners so that it becomes a regular part of your routine in the morning and at night.

Soaking for Plaque Removal

Sometimes fighting plaque can feel like an endless battle. You take steps to keep things clean so that you can feel confident in your oral health only to find out that the plaque was still building in the tiny places you didn’t realize your brush was missing.

It only takes a little plaque to end up with a big problem.

Soak your retainers in Invisalign cleaning crystals to clean and sanitize them regularly. Never use denture cleaners, mouthwash, or alcohol for soaking.  These products can damage the surface of the aligner causing it to become dull and more visible.  Consider soaking once each day for optimal results. When you are done, brush and rinse your aligners before putting them back in.
